Finding Future World – The Living Seas

The Living Seas As It Is Today

Since opening day, Epcot has added 3 pavilions to Future World, 2 on the east side and 1 on the west side. As we wrap up the west side of Future World, we will finish with that added pavilion: The Living Seas. Featuring three distinct areas, the Living Seas offered quite a bit to see for adventurous visitors. The theming has changed quite a bit since it has opened but the pavilion still offers quite to explore.

Welcome to Seabase Alpha

The pavilion that would eventually become the Living Seas was intended to open with the park in 1982. However, it took a bit longer for the concept to reach a point where it was ready to be built. Finally, the theme became an underwater scientific research facility named Seabase Alpha.

Finding Future World – The Land

The Land

When it opened, EPCOT Center’s Future World tried to capture the ideals that went into Walt Disney’s original plan for future urban communities. Since that opening many of the pavilions have taken on new focuses or been left to age. While time has taken its neighbors in different directions, The Land pavilion has not only maintained its focus but the spirit of the original EPCOT plan.

Learning With The Land

Future World was built around a unique style of “edutainment” that was meant to inform and inspire visiting guests. With each pavilion focusing on a different area, passing tourists would be able to learn a little bit about different areas. The Land took this one step further and actually attempts to learn as well.

Finding Future World – Imagination! – Week of Imagination!

Imagination Pavilion

Long before FastPass lines, Soarin’, or TestTrack were in place, lines used to pour out of the Journey Into Imagination pavilion. The pavilion housed 3 distinct attractions that were incredibly popular through the 80s and mid-90s. Over the course of the 90s, the pavilion has taken on a radical shift and its once robust popularity has wained. Sadly, what lead to this unfortunate downturn highlights one of the biggest issues of Epcot’s model. Join me as we rush to the first pavilion on my childhood visits, Imagination!

Anything That Sparks The Imagination!

Walt Disney’s original idea for EPCOT was born out of his work on the World’s Fair. After his passing, the remaining project ended up finding itself back to those roots. Much of the park was to be built around sponsored attractions. When film giant Kodak had come on board later in the planning stages, the result was the Journey Into Imagination pavilion.

Innovators of the Imagination Institute – Week of Imagination!

Imagination Institute Inventors of the Year Winners

While the changes to the Journey Into Imagination ride have had their share of controversy, the changes allowed Imagineers to sneak in some fun references to some of the more inventive characters from Disney’s live action films. In fact, with the queue themed to match the Imagination Institute introduced in the Magic Eye Theater year earlier, many of these nods are given before ever boarding the ride. Today, we continue our Week of Imagination!, and discuss some of the Disney innovators referenced in the Imagination! Pavilion.

Inventors of the Imagination Institute!

Once you walk into the queue for Journey Into Imagination, you’re surrounded by the colorful styling of the Imagination Institute. There are a few items in cases near the entrance but once you’re past the reception desk, the focus becomes about Dr. Nigel Channing and his fellow scientists. We’ll start with the gentleman featured in the giant portraits and move on to those a bit more hidden.
